SAMFA Family Day with Junie B. Jones.

Junie B. Jones and Sherlock Holmes discover some children, and their parents, don’t know how to act in a museum and the game is afoot. The Be Theater and San Angelo Museum of Fine Arts have teamed up for the first Family Day at the museum of the year. This collaboration is designed to make learning about the museum and about art activities in the city a fun and fulfilling experience.

The program opened with about thirty families in attendance when Alyssa Ramirez took the stage as Junie. Once the audience and Junie realized her map had also been her art project she called upon the famous detective Sherlock Holmes, played by Stoddard Owens, to help her show the museum guests around the grounds then spent time explaining protocol and etiquette to the audience.

Ultimately everyone arrives upstairs at the exhibit halls where the intrepid Holmes and precocious Junie led everyone in a search for clues. Once the clues were collected and decoded those assembled discovered that the greatest piece of art in the museum. Oh, what was the answer you ask? The greatest art that Junie and Sherlock helped us find was the people who came to enjoy and appreciate the various collections available.

Tiffany Ellwanger was in charge of the program and shared “We work with several non-profits and are always trying to combine art with education and fun.” That attitude runs through the very heart of the San Angelo Museum of Fine Arts and is evidenced by all of their events big and small. Each week they have projects on Thursday afternoons for community children to come out and learn more about the arts and each summer they host day camps that help children further appreciate the world of art.
